Burdekin River - Greenvale
Burdekin River - is 886klms long and drops 620mtrs over this distance.
Greenvale – (two, three and four day tours), is an old nickel mining town about a 3 hrs drive North/north-west from Townsville on the Gregory Development Road.
The township was purposely built for the mine workers and their families. The pub there is also the home of the song “Three Rivers Hotel”, sung by Slim Dusty. We call into the 3 Rivers Hotel for a tour and "smoko". With home made cake and biscuits.
The mine officially closed in 1993. The township still lives on. We do go on a tour of the township.
North Queensland Adventure Kayak Tours has exclusive permission from all property owners along the trip for access onto their property. Making it an all exclusive and authentic tour for you.
We do a minimum of three people, to a maximum of eight people per tour here.
Our tour travels take us the down dirt roads through these properties, to the River. As we are going through working cattle stations (both in the vehicle and paddling), there is the chance to see the workers mustering or working the cattle in the yards, where you can get out and get up close to the action.
For the tours, you just paddle down the river for two, three or four days, and just immerse yourself in nature. The peace and tranquility. You will get the chance to see wild pigs up close (really close actually) on the sides of the river, many different bird species, lots of cattle, kangaroos, other native animal species, and possibly even deer. (If we are quiet enough).
There are a number of sets of small rapids to negotiate.
Fishing is all the same along the Burdekin River and dam. However, there is currently no Barramundi in the system around Greenvale. If you would prefer to fish with bait, a bag of bait can be supplied.
Nearly all fish are released, (with the exception of Talapia which is a noxious fish). If you catch a fish you would like to have for dinner or breakfast, the guide can clean, and even cook the fish for you. Or if you prefer, you can do it all yourself.
